Job Summary:

The Director Manufacturing Technology will lead a team of manufacturing engineers to identify and develop new or improved concepts in tooling, manufacturing equipment, test equipment and processes for the production of electric motor components and assemblies.  Advance Nidec technology to address future needs in cost, quality, competitiveness, and productivity.  Interface with product engineering on design of new products to assure manufacturability at a competitive cost.  Perform liaison activities between product engineering and manufacturing sites to insure continuity and proliferation of best practices.  Manage engineering activities within the organization.  Ensure that all engineering projects, initiatives, and processes are in conformance with organization’s established policies and objectives.

Responsibilities include:

  • Participate in setting vision/strategy for the optimal deployment of manufacturing resources.
  • Lead an international team of manufacturing engineers; engineers will be located in the St. Louis HQ, Mexican facilities, and potentially in China facilities.
    • Manage engineering activities within the organization.  Ensure that all engineering projects, initiatives, and processes are in conformance with organization’s established policies and objectives.
  • Interface with product engineering teams across 5 or more business units to assess for manufacturability, share manufacturing best practices, assure excellent product quality, identify optimal component / motor manufacturing costs and tooling costs.
  • Lead new production implementations for significant new product programs.
  • Coordinate, when necessary, detailed manufacturing process design and implementation for new products and manufacturing processes.
  • Liaison between product engineering teams and manufacturing site teams.
  • Investigate and recommend processing methods, manufacturing equipment, test equipment, and tooling for new product development, cost reduction, quality, and productivity improvement.
  • Plan, specify, and control design and manufacture of dies, tooling, machines, and related processing equipment for the production of electric motor parts and assemblies.  Assist in their start-up and teaching of other personnel in same.
  • Advance new Nidec technology to prepare for future component and electric motor manufacturing to have improved quality and cost.
  • Keep informed of new process, equipment, and tooling developments in the electric motor industry and drive their implementation, where appropriate, to improve the competitive position of Nidec.
  • Benchmark facilities within and outside Nidec.  Share best practices across Nidec facilities.
  • Identify and develop new or improved concepts in tooling, manufacturing equipment, test equipment and processes for the production of electric motor components and assemblies.
  • Support Manufacturing Facilities as needed.
  • Troubleshoot tooling, material, process and equipment problems in branch plants and at outside suppliers.  Provide assistance to plant and supplier manufacturing personnel, working with tool / equipment suppliers, quality, procurement, and product engineering in defining corrective actions.
  • Analyze manufacturing output, quality, and cost using appropriate computer software.
  • Coordinate CIMC (and ACIM) leveraged capital purchases to reduce over capital spending; drive capital cost reductions via new sources, negotiation, new manufacturing processes.
  • Lead complex projects and complete them within approved capital budgets and time schedules.
  • Compile information for and write, when necessary, appropriations requests for the justification of capital equipment and tooling.
  • Evaluate, standardize and improve administrative processes – for example, equipment SOW and RFQ processes; payment term improvements; AR process improvements.
  • Travel to branch plants and suppliers as needed to perform above functions.  These travels may entail international travel of extended duration.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities and other Competencies:

  • BSME/EE, Manufacturing Engineering, or equivalent field.  Master’s degree in related field preferred.
  • A minimum of 10 years related work experience in electric motor manufacturing or electrical engineering with motor theory background preferred.
  • Certification: Desired lean design / manufacturing training and Six Sigma Yellow Belt or higher desired.
  • Knowledge of motor and component manufacturing; detailed knowledge of individual manufacturing processes including machining, die casting, molding, winding, test equipment, and automation will be invaluable to success.
  • Knowledge of project management tools such as Gantt charts and Action Tracking are desired.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills, including listening skills and skill in presenting findings and recommendations.  Ability to communicate with various departments and level of personnel.
  • Excellent analytical and problem solving skills.
  • Must be able to organize, prioritize and complete multiple tasks within established time constraints.
  • Works well under pressure, meeting objectives and deadlines consistently. Can manage tasks effectively from identification to closure.
  • Assertive, diligent and proactive individual with a high degree of initiative and independent judgement.
  • Strong attention to detail and organization.
  • Ability to navigate computer hardware and software such as MSOffice Applications and related functions (Word, Excel, PPT, Outlook), MS Project and related functions. Some experience navigating AutoCad or ProE a plus.

  • Solve Problems: Assess problem situations to identify causes, gather and process relevant information, generate possible solutions, and make recommendations and/or resolve the problem.
